Last week we heard that Slack was testing a long-awaited dark mode for its iOS app with beta testers. Now the platform has released an update for both iOS and Android to offer the popular feature to all users.
The fast turn around from the beta testing to a full release for Slack’s dark mode is sure to be a crowd pleaser. As we noted last week, users have been asking for the feature for some time.
Here’s how to turn on dark mode on the latest version of Slack for iOS:
simply tap the three dots in the upper-right corner and choose “Settings.” From there, you a new “Dark Mode” toggle. Simply flip the switch, and the app will instantly revamp itself with a dark interface.
As we previously noted, Slack’s dark mode uses a dark gray shade instead of a true black.
Another exciting tidbit from today’s release is that dark mode will be coming to desktop at some point in the future.
Full release notes:
What’s New
• Dark Mode can now be switched on (or off) in the Settings menu. Yes, it’s been a long road, but there’s finally dark at the end of the tunnel. NB: This is mobile only for now, with desktop coming later — thank you for both bearing with us, and for continuing to expect more of us.
Bug Fixes
• Fixed: The text welcoming you to Slack the very first time you launched the app didn’t quite fit the screen on smaller devices. Not the biggest problem in the world (literally), but first impressions count.
Notably, Slack recently changed its iOS and Android icons from a dark purple to white. As 9to5Mac’s Zac Hall pointed out, having the option for a dark icon would be great. Additionally, if you want a uniform dark aesthetic on mobile, you’ll need to change your theme via desktop as the sidebar doesn’t automatically change to fully dark.
Install Slack Mac
– yay desktop!
– lol, consider a dark mode icon (iOS totally supports options)
– the left sidebar is still white :)

Much to the relief of night owls everywhere, Slack has finally released a dark mode for macOS, Windows, and Linux. Here's how to banish the white background, and head over to the dark.
Slack App For Mac
If you're one of the people who have been holding their breath for a dark mode in Slack, it's time for you to breathe a little easier. Slack's HQ team has announced that dark mode has finally made an appearance on the desktop versions of the application.
If you use Slack on your Mac, you can try out dark mode today.
- Open Slack on your Mac
- Click on your name in the sidebar
- Select preferences
- Select themes
- Select a dark from the theme option
Slack has noted that you must be updated to version 4.0, and that you may need to restart the app a few times before the effects take place. All the old slack sidebar themes remain as well, but have been updated to work better with the new dark mode.
Dark mode is especially useful for those who work in low light or late at night. It is also beneficial to users with certain types of visual impairments.
In March of 2019, Slack released a dark mode for their iOS and Android apps, but tweeted 'Dark mode isn't available on our desktop app right now, but we're working on it. Stay tuned for a brighter, darker future.'
Six months later, Slack has finally given users the option to opt in to dark mode, should they want it. Responses from the community trend overwhelmingly positive.
SO! Finally! Here we have it: For those who need it, who want it, who have asked for it or who could just use it occasionally — dark mode is now available on the desktop app as well as mobile, for everyone. Read more: https://t.co/2KXjYlDWkUpic.twitter.com/OKZ0NfqybK
